As part of our role to protect the health, safety and wellbeing of patients and the public, the PSI is responsible for receiving and handling fitness to practise complaints about registered pharmacists or pharmacies and for managing those complaints according to the statutory process set out in Part 6 of the Pharmacy Act 2007. Complaints are heard before the statutory Disciplinary Committees, comprising of a lay majority of non-pharmacists, as well as pharmacists. There are three Disciplinary Committees:

  •  The Preliminary Proceedings Committee: This Committee reviews complaints at the screening stage in the complaints process and advises the Council of the PSI as to whether there is sufficient cause to warrant further action in relation to a complaint
  • The Professional Conduct Committee: This Committee hears complaints which have been referred for inquiry, primarily on grounds of professional misconduct and poor professional performance. All hearings before this Committee are heard in public
  • The Health Committee: This Committee hears complaints which have been referred for inquiry, usually on the grounds of inability to practise due to health impairment. All hearings before this Committee are heard in private.
